How to find a financial adviser?

Financial advisers help you to manage your investments, taxes, estate planning, education savings accounts, insurance, mortgages and retirement. You might also know them as a personal financial adviser, financial planner, financial service adviser or investment adviser.

A financial adviser will talk to you about your financial objectives and risk tolerance, and then recommend an appropriate financial planning strategy. To excel in this tightly regulated role they will need appropriate qualifications and a deep knowledge of all the latest financial products, rules and regulations.

To assess the quality of any given financial adviser, you should first visit the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) financial advisers register. It provides a list of people who provide personal advice on investments, superannuation and life insurance and, while the list isn’t comprehensive, it’s a good first stop.

Your next step should be to look at adviser ratings, where clients can both rate a financial adviser and review financial advisers. Alternatively you can ask around your friendship group or family to gain recommendations.

Before engaging a financial adviser, make a list of questions that will help you to determine whether or not your relationship will be a good fit. Many financial adviser-client relationships are long term and these questions can help you make the right decision when choosing who to work with

  2. Are you authorised to provide advice on the products you are recommending to me?
  3. Can you advise me on my current products?
  4. What is your experience as a financial adviser?
  5. Are you a member of any industry associations and/or professional bodies?
  6. How do you keep up to date with changes that might affect your clients?
  7. How do you get to know a new client?
  8. How are you paid, and what is your advice likely to cost?
  9. Do you get paid for selling me a certain product? What about any “soft dollar” benefits you may receive?
  10. What fees or other benefits do you receive for referring me to another person or business?
